Charmaine White Face, Lakota Sioux activist. Charmaine White Face or Zumila Wobaga (75) is from the Oglala band of the Tituwan Oceti Sakowin (the Lakota dialect speakers of the Great Sioux Nation.) She is active in the recogniton of the legality of treaties made between Native American nations and the United States, and the protection and restoration of the environmen. In 2002, she cofounded Defenders of the Black Hills, an all volunteer, non-profit environmental corporation. In Nov. 2007, Defenders was awarded the Interntaion Nuclear Free Future Award in the category of Resistance in Salzurg, Austria. Ms. White Face was also selected in 1994 to continue the lifetime work as the Spokesperson of the Sioux Nation Treaty Council which was established in 1894 by He Dog. At the passing of the previous Spokesperson in 2004, Ms White Face has continued the international work for the Treaty Council at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, New York City and other places. After participatig in the debates at the UN for many years, she authored the book, Indigenous Nations Rights in the Balance, which analyzes the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. She was nominated for the United Nations 2012 Martin Ennall's Award for Human Rights Defenders, and also for the Human Rights Defenders Award from Ireland. In 2012, she received a Peace & Justice award from SD Peace and Justice, and in 2010, she was recognized by Best of the West Magazine as the "Best of the West Indian Rights Fighter." She has received numerous other awards and nomination. She is a freelance writer, published author, and essayist. Her editorials appear in many local newspapers and Native American newspapers. Although she is a political writer, her work also includes topics on the environment, human rights, sacred sites, and decolonization.
