This folder contains chapters 3,4,8,9,10 and parts of chapter 19 of an unpublished manuscript: In the West that Was, written by Charles W. Allen, a mule driver, soldier, homesteader, blacksmith, editor, postmaster and cattleman 1851-1942. Married to a mixed-blood woman, and spending a good portion of his life working on or near the Pine Ridge Reservation, Mr. Allen comments on the following topics in the chapters contained here: (1.) Red Cloud cuts the flagpole, (2.) the founding of Pine Ridge, South Dakota, (3.) changing conditions under Agent McGillycuddy, (4.) the building of schools on the Pine Ridge Reservation, and (5.) a story concerning Valandry and Salway.
