Abstract: Both in Lakota and English This study examines the criteria for a safe house for teenage girls in the Littel Wound High School at the Medicine Root District on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in Kyle, South Dakota. Teenage girls from the Little Wound High School are faced with excessive levels of social problems such as high drop out rates, teen pregnancy, physical and mental abuse. A quantitative study was conducted. Thirty-two female students between the ages of 14-17 were surveyed. The surveys assisted in setting the criteria for an effective safe house for at-risk girls. This study strongly indicates that a safe house that effectively meets the needs of disadvantage teenage girls should lead to a decline in social problems such as homelessness, pregnancy, alcohol, drug, physical, mental, and emotional abuse.
