fixme Indigenous activism in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s challenged Eurocentric narratives and stereotypes of Indigenous peoples, and of equality in the United States. The 1973 Occupation of Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota gained international attention when 200300 members of the American Indian Movement and supporters occupied the Wounded Knee Trading Post and the Sacred Heart Church in Wounded Knee, South Dakota, which had been the site of the 1890 Wounded Knee massacre. Protestors demanded hearings on treaties, investigations and exposure of the practices of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Department of Interior, an investigation of the living conditions on Sioux Reservations in South Dakota, as well as local and state officials mistreatment of Sioux people. Although most scholarship and reporting primarily focused on its domestic impact, the fact is that the Occupation occurred during the Cold War and had international implications. This thesis examines how the 1973 Occupation of Wounded Knee was reported in newspapers from the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR) and compares this coverage to Indigenous and non-Indigenous newspapers in the United States. Although articles in DDR newspapers promoted solidarity with Indigenous causes, most articles did not provide detailed coverage of the events at Wounded Knee. Rather, most articles contributed to an anti-American narrative and focused on criticisms of the United States, especially larger patterns of minority discrimination and the aggressive response of the United States government to Indigenous activism. In contrast to news coverage in the DDR, many DDR citizens wrote letters to Indigenous communities and newspapers and were genuinely interested in the realities of Indigenous peoples. The resulting connections between DDR citizens and Indigenous communities ultimately led to solidarity movements in y as well as the DDR development of transnational activist networks.
