Abstract: Both in Lakota and English Schools throughout the United States have implemented various interventions to address and resolve student attendance and behavioral issues. Research shows that character education is effective in reducing undesirable behaviors and contributing to academic and social success of students. Character Counts is one of the leading behavioral programs dedicated to the advancement of character education. In 2000, Little Wound School (LWS) on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation on South Dakota endorsed the Character Counts framework and implemented it at the K-12 grade levels. LWS anticipated that Character Counts would increase student academic achievement and attendance and would decrease student violence, drop-out rate and substance abuse. This longitudinal study examined Annual Report Cards (ARCs) supplied through LWS and posted on the Office of Indian Education Programs (OIEP) website from 1999-2005 to measure the effect of Character Counts framework in student academic and social success. This study has determined the CC framework to be an effective intervention in the reduction of student violence, drop-out rate and substance abuse and has increased student academic achievement at LWS.
