The arrival of the Cavalry at Yankton, Dakota Territory, in early spring 1873 started a chain of events that ultimately led to the most notable of all, Custer's last stand. The story tells of a German emigrant, August Kaufman, homesteader, freighter and government surveyor, who had an important and exciting part in what could be balled the first chapter of Custer's trip to the Little Big Horns.
